In God’s Creation

At First Christian, we take seriously God’s call to be good stewards of creation.  Some of the ways we live out that call include:

  • “Greening” our church practices by recycling and using recycled products where possible, by incorporating the use of cleaning products that are environmentally-friendly, and by using reusable mugs for our coffee socials.  Following a recent energy audit, we increased the insulation in our building to reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Being a member congregation of Iowa Interfaith Power and Light.  Together, we sponsored the first Cool Congregations  workshop in Ames, where we invited communities of faith across Ames learn how they can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Forming Earth 101, our own  “green team,” an enthusiastic group of folks who are committed to exploring ways to preserve and nurture God’s creation.  Currently this group is working hard to encourage and educate our members on how to reduce their carbon footprint.  Want to make a difference?  Start by taking your own carbon footprint , then make some changes that work in your own household.  You’ll save money, conserve energy, and conserve environmental resources.
  • Participating in the Disciples of Christ Coffee Project that links congregations with small farmer cooperatives throughout the world in purchases of fair trade products through Equal Exchange Fair Trade.  By purchasing organic coffees, teas, chocolates, and snacks, we have the opportunity to support the use of environmentally responsible agricultural practices throughout the world.  Learn more about how these “green partnerships,” are helping farmers to make a difference in God’s creation in their part of the world.
We invite you to join us in making a difference in caring for God’s creation!
